Travel is food for the soul, but for the human body, it often presents a serious biomechanical challenge. Recently I returned from the road and felt on my own skin how one small mistake can jeopardize the whole vacation. Namely, during a long flight, in euphoria about the destination that awaits me, I completely neglected the lumbar support. I sat for hours without anything tucked under my lower back, and the result was brutal: as soon as I landed, my muscles went into a state of acute spasm.
Instead of enjoying the first steps through the new city, I barely walked. When the consequences of poor sitting are added to kilometer-long walks, the body enters a state of “tourist effort syndrome”. Fortunately, I implemented a protocol that brought me back to life, which every traveler should know.
Emergency Remediation Protocol: Tips & Tricks from the Field
If it “cuts” you in the back or you get muscle inflammation while on the road, you don't have the luxury of waiting. Here's how to do an emergency “reset” in a hotel room:
- Elevation and venous drainage: Every evening after a full day of walking, raise your feet against the wall at a 90-degree angle. 15 minutes in this position drastically reduces swelling and facilitates circulation that has been slowed down by hours of sitting and standing.
- Targeted stretching of muscle groups: Immediately after the elevation, while the muscles are still warm and well supplied, do a light set of stretches to prevent permanent shortening of the fibers:
- Quadriceps (anterior lobe): Standing on one leg, pull the heel of the other leg towards the gluteus. Push your hips forward slightly. Hold for 30 seconds per leg.
- Leaves: Lean your hands against the wall, place one foot behind and push your heel firmly toward the floor until you feel a tightness. Essential for long hikes.
- Psoas (hip flexor): Lower into a lunge with your knee on the floor and push your pelvis forward. This is the most important exercise to relieve pressure in the lower back after sitting for a long time on the plane.
- Contrast hydrotherapy: While taking a shower, change the temperature of the water in sore spots. Alternating 30 seconds of warm and 30 seconds of cold water acts as a “vascular gymnastics” that accelerates the expulsion of the products of inflammation.
- Local care: At bedtime, apply a diclofenac-based gel to critical areas, while during the day a mild analgesic can help keep you functional.
Why is home help only temporary “patching”?
Although these tricks saved me from touring all the museums and squares I had planned, I was aware that I was only masking the problem. The body was under constant strain, and the muscle fibers suffered microtraumas that real peace cannot cure.
The real danger arises when you return to Belgrade. The accumulated fatigue, the consequences of sitting on the return flight and the days spent on painkillers are a time bomb. Only when you return, do you realize how exhausted your body actually is.
